One of my favorite iPhone features is the “Find My iPhone” app. As of last month, everyone in my household has an iPhone and, while it hasn’t revolutionized anything, it has simplified my life a little. All the devices are registered to a single account: mine. So, I can find out where my family is without having to call or text and wait for an answer. Stalkerish? Lazy? Maybe, but that’s who I am.

Sometimes, when I get home from work the house is empty. With “Find My iPhone” I know where everyone is in 30 seconds. Often, they’re all together and i can rest easily. If anyone is somewhere unusual, I can text or call to find out what’s going on.

The other day my wife went on a walk to the boardwalk. I texted her to see if she was ok, but she didn’t answer. Fortunately, I was able to see where she was and that she was moving at a walking pace. All was well and I went back to what I was doing.

Maybe one of the best features of the app is that you can now get directions to wherever your device is. For example, if I have to pick up one of our children from a friend’s house or somewhere where my wife dropped them off I just launch “Find My iPhone” and get directions. No need to try to get directions from them or risk getting a wrong address.

As another example, last week my wife went to a training session and sent me a text saying that the car was making strange noises. Since she was going to be out late, i decided to use “Find My iPhone” to get directions to where she was and switched cars without interrupting her.

I’m writing this while we’re on vacation. Our daughters have packed a lunch and went to play at the fountain with their cousins. Apparently, they’re at the little beach now. I know where they are and that they’re safe. So I can go back to relaxing.
